Charity nights are emotional events. The MC has to be warm without being saccharine, professional without being cold, and ready to adjust in real time if a beneficiary's story lands harder than expected.

Most of my charity work has been with mid-sized not-for-profits, foundations and corporate-paired fundraising events. Auctions ranging from $40k to $400k, audiences from 150 to 700, formats from intimate dinner to large gala.

With beneficiary speakers (gentle, careful), with the auctioneer if separate, with the fundraising lead.

On the night, pre-doors

Walk the room, mic check, brief with charity staff and any volunteers running pledge/auction collection.

Do you charge full fee for charity events?

Generally yes — this is professional work. That said, registered not-for-profits with constrained budgets get a discounted rate, and certain causes I'm aligned with receive pro-bono support. Ask in your enquiry.

Can you support a live auction or paddle raise as MC?

Yes — I frame the auction segment, hand to your professional auctioneer, then keep momentum between lots. For paddle raises I'll bridge from donor story to ask, then read paddle numbers back to the room with energy.

How do you balance fun with serious cause messaging?

Tone-switching is the whole craft. You want the room laughing during dinner, listening during donor stories, and emotionally ready to give by the paddle raise. The transitions between those modes are where a good charity MC earns the fee.

What's your experience with charity gala fundraisers?

Decades. Cancer councils, education trusts, mental-health charities, arts organisations and community causes are all part of the calendar. The brief changes, the discipline doesn't.

Can you MC charity events outside Melbourne?

Yes — interstate charity galas are common. Travel and accommodation are factored in transparently and discussed with your committee before the booking is confirmed.

Do you donate any portion of your fee back to the cause?

Often yes — particularly for established not-for-profits where there's a clear giving relationship. I'll discuss this on a case-by-case basis after we've spoken about the event.

What information do you need from a charity client before quoting?

The cause, the night's structure, the auction format (live, silent, hybrid), expected guest count, and your fundraising target. That gives me enough to come back with a fee and a delivery plan.
